I’m a dad, granddad and transplanted American in London.

I’ve had two (main) careers so far: 20 years as a journalist and another 20 years or so (with some overlap) writing software, mostly for journalists. Both of those strands of my working life focused on content – creating and editing, and making it possible to consume, find and share.

For pay, I currently write mostly in Typescript/Javascript, but I’ve previously worked in Scala, C++, C and Python.

I’m a software engineer and former journalist with an unusual combination of strong communication and technical skills.

2021-Present

Led projects to create a new application for creators to describe content (e.g., subject tags, target age group, etc.), tackle tech debt in our continuous integration pipeline and manage images associated with topics across the BBC’s web sites.

I’m also a key resource on our team on how to encourage innovation and best practices on remote working.
